Reflections on the DR
It is hard to believe that I've been back from the DR for a month now. Although I have settled back into my work routine, I have had amply opportunity to discuss my experiences with friends, family, coworkers, and in larger settings. I was asked to share at Trinity's Intervarsity Large Group Meeting this week and an article is being written about me in the upcoming edition of On Trinity Hill, an electronic newsletter for the campus. I've also included below a post I started writing soon after I returned and never finished, looking at my DR experience by the numbers...
Number of meals with rice, beans, and chicken (or any variation thereof): 20-25
Other favorite Dominican foods: anything with yucca, fresh fruits (avocado, mango, pineapple), and Dominican pizza
Number of times I saw a guy on horseback riding through the neighborhood: about every day, sometimes twice a day
Books read: 4
- Seizing Your Divine Moment: Dare to Live a Life of Adventure by Erwin Raphael McManus
- Mountains Beyond Mountains: Healing the World: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer by Tracy Kidder
- Why the Cocks Fight: Dominicans, Haitians, and the Struggle for Hispaniola by Michele Wucker
- Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut
I would recommend all of these, the first was a gift from my friend Pam who is living in Nicaragua, careful though, you may get off your couch and actually do something! The second is about the work of Paul Farmer in Haiti (and other parts of the world), the third is more of an academic book about Hispaniola, and the fourth is a great collection of short stories by Vonnegut.
